12th Fail is a coming-of-age film that was much required in these trying times of the 2023 Bollywood Industry. It has an impeccable direction of Vidhu Vinod Chopra and the production of Vinod Chopra and Bhavna Vinod Chopra. Portraying the real-life story of Manoj Kumar Sharma, an IPS officer who failed twice in his 12th exam before finally breaking out of the spiral. The film stars Vikrant Massey as the lead whose down-to-earth features have added miles to the character’s depth. This film is a biographical take on Manoj’s life struggles and his journey towards achieving his dream of becoming an IPS officer.
The story of 12th fail movie unfolds in a typical suburban Bilgaon in Chambal where Manoj, portrayed with raw earnestness by Vikrant struggles through his poverty. As an ambitious boy, he never let his failures define him. Their family gets a devastating blow when Manoj’s father is suspended from work for his honesty. To make it worse, the headmaster of Manoj’s school promotes cheating for the students to pass this exam.
It provides a focal point for Manoj’s inspiration when DSP Dushyant arrests the headmaster and explains to the student that being honest is the best thing one can choose for oneself. Taking inspiration from this event Manoj determines never to take the route of wrongdoing or to promote illicit activities in any way. He acknowledges his dream to become an IPS officer and decides to write his own destiny.
His ambition is soon tested when he fails the 12th exam two times in a row. But he doesn’t let this failure give up on his dreams and decides to try again until he finally passes the exam. He shifts to Delhi as an aspiring IPS officer to crack one of the toughest exams in the country. He meets Pritam Pandey who soon becomes his good companion. The shift in gravity takes us through the coaching and institutional backgrounds which have quite a resemblance with other such works. His path crosses with Shraddha Joshi which gives way for romance in the plot. Together they navigate through the day-to-day hurdles to get that one spot.
12th Fail Movie Review
12th Fail is a powerful and touching film, depicting the story of a man who never gave up on his dreams. It is a film that will inspire everyone and resonate with the audiences on a deeper level. The director’s aptly dramatic approach to the portrayal of a storyline that can get predictable at parts leaves us indulged till the last. The audience will soon find themselves emotionally involved in the journey, rooting for Manoj the whole time. The dialogues are well written and give character to each role. The cast has outdone themselves in a depiction so impeccable that they own the characters. The cinematography by Rangarajan and Ramabadran, and music by Shantanu Moitras further enhance the storytelling.
There couldn’t have been a better depiction of Ashok Pathak’s bestselling book on which 12th fail movie is based on. On the whole, if you like real-life inspiring stories, this one is for you.
