When their own families are falling apart, their fathers, Jeongjae and Daeuk, step in to help them heal.
However, when they grow up, things get messy as Hae-joon and San-ha decide to reconnect with their biological families. Jun-wo is left behind and feels totally betrayed. But, some time later, the gang is back again except this time, the bond is no longer the same. Her two “brothers,” might have developed a crush on her, causing further potential damage to their relationship.
Episode 1-2 Recap of Family by Choice
Episode 1 of Family by Choice starts with a young, cheerful girl, Ju-won, who lives with her widowed father, Jung-jae. One day, after coming back from school, Ju-won tells her father about her desire to make a friend to play with because she gets bored when he is not around.
Much to her excitement, a new family moves into their building who have a son of her age named San-ha. She thinks they can be friends but San-ha stays distant in the beginning because of the family tragedies he is going through – he lost her sister and her mother blames him for it.
Meanwhile, another family moves in but that doesn’t excite Ju-won when she learns that her father is trying to hit it off with the single mom, Seo-hyun, of that family. However, things spice up when after a fight with bullies, Ju-won, San-ha, and the new kid, Hae-joon form an unlikely bond. They become a tight-knit trio over time, and a few years forward are now high schoolers.
In the second episode, the story starts with Ju-won, San-ha, and Hae-joon facing bullies in school. The girls in the school accuse Ju-won of having feelings for her “brothers.” Instigated and advised by Hae-joon, Ju-won retaliates against the bullies. They end up creating a scene but San-ha comes in to defend both of them.
Back at home, Ju-won is having a bad time dealing with the neighbours’ gossip about her family. San-ha is also struggling due to her grandmother’s interference in the situation.
There is a clash between the siblings when Ju-won catches San-ha with his female classmate. She thinks that San-ha is hiding his relationship. In the argument, San-ha reminds Ju-won that she has no right to question because they are not blood-related.
Elsewhere, Hae-joon finds himself in an awkward position when he discovers that someone is taking his pictures. The episode closes on a shocking note as Hae-joon learns that his father is coming to his school.
