The movie pits justice against morality as Vettaiyan, led by Rajinikanth in the character of SP Athiyan, a fearless encounter cop, clashes with Fahadh Faasil’s character, Battery, who hypes Athiyan as a “Category 5” cop lauded for his ruthless approach to criminals. But the real tension begins with his clash with Amitabh Bachchan’s veteran cop Sathyadev, who respects Athiyan but refuses to condone vigilante justice.
The Vettaiyan movie reaches its peak when a good Samaritan school teacher, Saranya (Dushara Vijayan), helps Athiyan uncover a drug smuggler. Soon, she is brutally killed and the police are at their wits’ end to catch her killer, who, much later, breaks away from custody. Coming under immense pressure, Athiyan is tasked with solving the case through a speedy, decisive encounter that clashes with Sathyadev’s belief in due process. Does it finally promise a moral showdown?
However, the movie is disappointing in the second half. The film does not go about exploring the details of the ideological clash between Rajinikanth and Amitabh Bachchan. Instead, it goes for the known and formulaic approach with both the larger conspiracy behind Saranya’s murder getting muddled and the villain basically being a stock character from a commercial template. One finds a lack of originality in the action scenes while the twists in the plot are too easily anticipated.

Vettaiyan movie boasts of a star-studded cast despite shortcomings in screenplay. Rajinikanth dominates the screen and Amitabh Bachchan brings depth into his role. Slow pacing, heavy hand moralizing, and predictable writing weigh it down. Talents like Manju Warrier and others playing supporting roles are wasted.
The movie does not live up to any of those grand promises. While it entertains, it settles for a one-time watch instead of having that memorable cinematic experience that it could have been. Director T.J. Gnanavel has made an honest attempt to preserve the script of the movie intact with the audience and has presented it well.
