Karen Fukuhara was born on February 10, 1992 in Los Angeles, California. Both of her parents are Japanese. While growing up, her first language was Japanese. She also attended a Japanese language school on Saturdays for 11 years. She has a younger brother, often talked of as a “troublemaker.” Fukuhara became interested in martial arts while she was in middle school. She achieved a brown-striped belt in Karate after a dedicated effort. She has been a lifelong fan of Pokémon and enjoyed playing her Game Boy as a child.

Fukuhara attended the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Here, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and a minor in Theater in 2014. While at UCLA, she was a member of an a cappella group and was accompanied by another future actress Kelly Marie Tran. She also reported for a sports show on NHK in Japan.
